Mariyah (Elizabeth Maria Jossick) has been a Middle Eastern dance performer in the New York area since 2001. A student of visual arts and dance for many years Mariyah discovered oriental dance during her studies at New York University and, falling in love with the music and movements found the artistic expression that deeply suited her.
Mariyah began her study of the dance in the American Cabaret style with Serena Wilson and went on to study Egyptian and fusion styles with Shoshana of New York, Elena Lentini and Dalia Carella. Mariyah has been a member of the Dalia Carella Dance Collective since 2002 and also performs regularly as a soloist in venues in NYC.
Mariyah holds a BA from NYU's Gallatin School of individualized study where she majored in Religious studies and studio art and presented her final colloquium on creativity and spriritualty, exploring the spiritual element in the creative process. In her studies she explored art.dance, music and poetry and had opportunities to travel and study in India, Turkey, Israel and Egypt where she returns regularly to visit and study. She has also been a student of yoga since 1995 which greatly informs her dance and understanding of movement. Mariyah is currently completing her yoga teacher's training through the Himalayan Institute.
